The 401E provides the opportunity to own a precision built, high quality, European machine for the same price as a far eastern import of much lighter construction. At this price there is nothing else to match it.
The frame is made from heavy steel plate and is welded with folds and a ridged spine to increase rigidity and improve strength so that blades up to 35mm wide can be properly tensioned. Wheels are cast iron, dynamically balanced with a precision ground thick rubber tyre bonded to them and ground with a crowned surface to aid tracking.The whole upper wheel assembly is mounted on a heavy cast iron tensioning system to apply the necessary force to tension wide blades properly. The toolpost is made from a 35mm solid steel post for rigidity and has smooth, easy to set roller guides above and below the table. The table itself is large and heavy, mounted on a double steel trunnion with rack and pinion tilt. The tension gauge is properly calibrated and a useful guide rather than the ineffectual and inaccurate systems found on so many machines at this price level. The 3 HP induction motor provides all the power needed to make use of the large capacities (max height under guides 400mm) and throat width 400mm. This machine weighs in at 158kg and the solid stable construction allows it to run at speeds almost double those of far eastern rivals. The extra speeds combined with the flywheel effect of the cast bandwheels enable much more rapid and better finished cuts than can be achieved on rival machines. An absolute bargain.
